Safety Policy

How VeriServe protects students, ensures record integrity, and handles misconduct.

Report a Safety Issue

If you believe a student is in danger, have identified fraudulent submissions, or need to report a bad actor, email us immediately at safety@veriserve.org.

In an emergency, contact local authorities first.

Trust by default

Every record is logged, attributed, and auditable.

Transparent review

Administrators can inspect any record in their jurisdiction.

Accountability

Bad actors face account suspension and school notification.

1. Student Safety

VeriServe is a record-keeping platform, not a volunteer placement service. We do not directly supervise students in the field. However, we take the following steps to protect students who use the platform:

  • Only organizations that have been approved by a school or district can offer opportunities to that school's students
  • Schools retain full discretion to suspend or revoke organization approvals at any time
  • Supervisor accounts are tied to a specific organization and cannot freely access student records outside their authorized scope
  • All actions are logged with timestamps and attributed to named users
  • Platform administrators have visibility into any unusual patterns or flagged activity

2. Reporting Fraudulent Hour Submissions

The integrity of service hour records is central to VeriServe's value. We take fraudulent submissions seriously.

Examples of fraud include:

  • Submitting hours for service that did not occur
  • Inflating the number of hours worked
  • Submitting duplicate records for the same session
  • A supervisor approving hours they cannot verify
  • An organization approving bulk hours for students without real interactions

How to report fraud:

  • Students and supervisors: use the "Report an issue" link in your dashboard
  • School admins and district admins: review and flag suspicious records from the compliance view
  • Anyone: email safety@veriserve.org

VeriServe applies automated heuristics to flag high-risk submissions (e.g., claims exceeding 20 hours in a single day). Flagged submissions are reviewed by platform administrators before affecting a student's official transcript.

3. Reporting Suspicious Organizations

If you believe an organization on VeriServe is operating in bad faith — e.g., offering fabricated opportunities, harvesting student information, or behaving inappropriately — please report it immediately.

  • Email safety@veriserve.org with the organization name and a description of the issue
  • Include any evidence if available (screenshots, communications)
  • School admins can revoke an organization's school-level approval immediately from their dashboard

VeriServe will investigate reports within 3 business days and take appropriate action, including suspending the organization account, removing the organization from all school directories, and notifying affected schools.

4. Platform Moderation Rights

VeriServe reserves the right to:

  • Remove or flag any hour submission that violates these policies
  • Suspend or terminate any account at our discretion for violation of the Terms of Service
  • Block an organization from any or all school directories
  • Notify the relevant school or district of a student's misconduct if we determine it appropriate
  • Cooperate with law enforcement if required

We will act reasonably and proportionately. Moderation decisions can be appealed by emailing safety@veriserve.org.

5. Student Safety Expectations

All students using VeriServe are expected to:

  • Participate only in volunteer opportunities they have personally verified are legitimate
  • Never share personal information beyond what is required for service coordination
  • Report to a trusted adult (teacher, parent, school counselor) if any volunteer situation feels unsafe, coercive, or inappropriate
  • Use only their own account — never share passwords or log in as another student
